[ah, the username quintessa most wants to see at any time, surely. this pops up a day or so after their mission. long enough for him to realise.]

What happened?

[ Quintessa barely restrains a sigh. ]

Bos'Kit was present at the site we infiltrated. Things did not go... particularly well. Your Optimus and the others should be back soon.

[she would be forgiven for assuming he was coming to this in a pugnacious mood, and he almost did, but really can't bring himself to start a fight. even if he didn't have to personally see to optimus's destruction this time, it still hurts too much.]

She was to show up when we tried to get Writhe.
Things tend to go terribly when she's involved.
And yet I'm still certain one day we will have her head.

Did she mention any new Quintesson?

Writhe was there, as well as Svelte and Marie. They're all dangerous.

The micekin to be sacrificed all escaped with their lives. Lana was killed, but I returned her.

[ Putting an even larger target on her for Bos'Kit's furor than it already was, no doubt. Oh well. ]

[oh, god. he doesn't bother to go down a guilt spiral for this, but it still doesn't feel great.]

Marie had been enticed by Writhe during our fight. I was the last standing and had wanted to fire on her to allow her to die as herself instead of in Bos'kit's servitude, but failed to do so.
It's regrettable she was changed; I am aware of how dangerous her magic is.

I can't say I'm not appreciative of Bos'kit facing the reality she can't always get what she wants.
I am fully aware of the irony in this statement.

[there's a pause, then:]

That black fire makes it hurt more, doesn't it.

Even with her now being changed and under Bos'Kit's control, I doubt any Optimus would fault you for not killing her. I cannot speak to yours specifically, but I imagine most would praise you for it instead.

If it hadn't been Marie, it would have been someone else. Perhaps someone weaker, but perhaps someone stronger. You didn't invite ill by not killing Marie, you simply let it be her face instead of someone else's. You are not at fault here.

[ In her garden, Quintessa winces at the reminder of the blackfire scorching across her inner being. ]

... do your best to be charitable to your husband when he returns, Megatron. They all fought so very valiantly.

It was no matter of morals; I was physically restrained before I could take the shot.
Regardless of how he or any of them would feel about it, it was a sordid action I would have taken no pleasure in but done out of necessity.
I'm sure you understand better than most.

[for once, he means this as no insult. quintessa's pragmatism is one of the things he actually respects about her, though it could be easy to view it as meaning offense. predictably, he doesn't really care either way.

but-- he had only brought up marie because he wanted to know if she had actually been changed. he had no inkling that...

should he really be surprised his failure got optimus killed? he's very good at that, it seems like. megatron doesn't respond for a while, wrestling with a whole bunch of emotions and uncertainty of how to process them.

I will not make the effort to extend you the benefit of the doubt going forward, then.

[he frowns at the message, not all sure why she was giving him the benefit of the doubt in the first place.]
